How Old is My Dog is Human Years?
Your dog isn't seven times your age. A 2019 UC San Diego study cracked the real formula using DNA methylation, and the answer changes depending on your dog's size and life stage.
The "multiply by 7" rule is broken
The 7-to-1 ratio came from comparing average lifespans in the 1950s. Humans lived to about 70, dogs to about 10. Tidy math, terrible biology.
Dogs age fast in the first two years then slow down. A one-year-old Lab isn't a 7-year-old kid. She's closer to a 30-year-old adult. Physically mature, sexually active, fully grown.
The actual formula
Tina Wang and her team at UC San Diego compared methylation patterns (chemical tags on DNA that change with age) in 105 Labrador Retrievers and 320 humans. The result:
human_age = 16 × ln(dog_age) + 31
That's natural log, not base 10. Plug in a 4-year-old dog: 16 × ln(4) + 31 = 16 × 1.386 + 31 = about 53 human years. A 10-year-old dog comes out to roughly 68.
The formula was built on Labs, so it works best for medium-sized breeds. Toy breeds age slower after puberty. Giant breeds age faster. More on that below.

A Great Dane at 8 is geriatric. A Chihuahua at 8 is solidly middle-aged. Same calendar years, different biology.
Why bigger dogs age faster
Large breeds grow more in less time. That growth burns through cellular reserves and raises cancer risk. A 2013 paper in The American Naturalist by Cornelia Kraus and colleagues found that for every 4.4 lb of body mass, life expectancy drops about one month. Great Danes average 7–10 years. Toy poodles often hit 15–17.
It's not perfectly linear, but the trend holds across breeds.
Worked example: your 6-year-old Beagle
She weighs 28 lbs (medium). Wang's formula gives 16 × ln(6) + 31 = about 60 human years. Size-adjusted, she's roughly 42–44.
What that means practically:
- She's middle-aged, not senior. No need to switch to "senior" food yet.
- Annual bloodwork starts being worth the $80–$150 vet add-on.
- Joint supplements (glucosamine, fish oil) are reasonable preventive moves now, not treatment.
- Watch her weight. An extra 3 lbs on a Beagle is the equivalent of you gaining 25.
Life stages, in human terms
Puppy (0–6 months). Equivalent to human ages 0–10. Brain wiring, socialization window, vaccinations.
Adolescent (6–18 months). Roughly 10–20 in human years. Sexual maturity, testing boundaries, that frustrating phase where training seems to evaporate.
Adult (1.5–6 years for medium breeds). Human 25–50. Peak physical condition. The years where preventive care pays the most.
Mature (6–9 years). Human 50–65. Start watching for lumps, dental disease, weight creep. Annual senior screening panels run $150–$300 and catch kidney and thyroid issues early.
Senior (9+ years for medium, 6+ for giants). Human 65 and up. Twice-yearly vet visits. Heart, joints, cognition. Budget for $1,500–$4,000 in possible diagnostic and treatment costs per year.
What about cats?
Different formula, different biology. Cats hit 15 human years by age 1, 24 by age 2, then add about 4 human years per cat year after that. A 10-year-old cat is roughly 56.
When the formula actually matters
You don't need to know your dog's "human age" to love her. You need it for three decisions:
- Diet shifts. Senior formulas matter at the right biological age, not just when the bag says "7+".
- Diagnostic cadence. Bloodwork frequency should track biological age, not paperwork age.
- Activity expectations. A 9-year-old Lab pulling on the leash isn't being stubborn. Her hips are equivalent to a 62-year-old's.
