The myth and the actual math
For 70 years the standard answer was "multiply by 7." A folk calculation, not a finding. Vets walked away from it once epigenetic data caught up.
Real aging is non-linear. Year one runs fast (about 15 human years). Year two slows down (about 9 more). After that, the rate depends on adult body size. Tiny dogs cruise. Giants burn out.

Where does the math come from?
We use a piecewise formula: 15 human years by age 1, 24 by age 2, then size-dependent multipliers per year after that. The size multipliers (4 small, 5 medium, 6 large, 7 giant) match AKC and AVMA breakpoints. The puppy-year curve matches Wang et al.'s 2019 epigenetic-clock study from UC San Diego.
Why does size matter so much after year two?
Bigger dogs grow up faster and die younger. A Great Dane reaches geriatric stages by 7. A Chihuahua at 7 is barely mature. The 'why' is still debated. The current best guess is that fast tissue growth in large breeds correlates with faster cellular aging.
Is the 7-year rule completely wrong?
Yes and no. It averages out roughly right across a medium-sized dog's lifetime. Wrong for any specific year of a specific size. Vets stopped citing it in the early 2010s.
What about mixed breeds?
Use the adult-weight size category. A 45-lb shelter mix uses the medium curve regardless of which breeds went in.
