How Much to Feed a Goldendoodle
How Much to Feed a Goldendoodle
A healthy adult Goldendoodle needs roughly 700 to 1,400 calories a day, split into two meals. Where you land depends on size (mini, medium, or standard), age, activity level, and whether your dog is spayed or neutered.
Below is a working chart, plus how to adjust when your doodle is a puppy, a senior, or clearly gaining weight around the ribs.
Daily calories by adult weight
The formula most vets use is Resting Energy Requirement (RER) = 70 Γ (body weight in kg)^0.75, then multiplied by an activity factor of 1.4 to 1.8 for an average adult pet. Here's what that works out to for the three Goldendoodle sizes.
| Adult weight | Size class | Daily calories (kcal) | Dry food (cups/day, ~360 kcal/cup) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 lb (7 kg) | Petite / toy | 400β520 | 1 to 1Β½ |
| 25 lb (11 kg) | Mini | 570β730 | 1Β½ to 2 |
| 40 lb (18 kg) | Medium | 820β1,050 | 2ΒΌ to 3 |
| 55 lb (25 kg) | Standard | 1,050β1,350 | 3 to 3ΒΎ |
| 70 lb (32 kg) | Large standard | 1,260β1,620 | 3Β½ to 4Β½ |
Cup counts assume a mid-range adult kibble at about 360 kcal per cup. Your bag's label will show the actual density. A high-calorie performance food can run 450+ kcal/cup, which means fewer scoops, not more.
Worked example. A 42-pound medium Goldendoodle, spayed, gets short daily walks and a longer weekend hike. Her RER is 70 Γ (19)^0.75 β 636 kcal. Multiply by 1.5 for a spayed, moderately active adult, and you get roughly 950 kcal a day. That's about 2β cups of a 360 kcal/cup kibble, or 1β cups twice a day.
You can plug your own dog's weight into the food portion calculator and skip the math.
Puppy feeding by age
Goldendoodle puppies eat far more per pound than adults because they're still building bone and muscle. Use their expected adult weight, not current weight, to set portions.
- 8 to 12 weeks: 4 meals a day. Total roughly 55 kcal per pound of expected adult weight.
- 3 to 6 months: 3 meals a day. Around 45 kcal per pound of expected adult weight.
- 6 to 12 months: 2 to 3 meals a day. Drop to 35 kcal per pound.
- 12 to 18 months (standards): transition to adult food and adult portions. Minis and mediums usually finish growing by 10 to 12 months. Standards can grow until 18 months.
A 10-week-old puppy expected to hit 45 pounds needs about 2,475 kcal a day at peak growth. That sounds like a lot because it is. Puppy kibble is denser and formulated with more protein, fat, and DHA to match.
Adjustments that actually matter
Spay/neuter status. Metabolic rate drops 20 to 30 percent after the procedure. If your dog was fixed and kept eating the same portions, they're probably carrying extra weight. Cut calories by about 20 percent for the first 6 months post-surgery and reassess.
Activity level. A doodle who trots on-leash for 30 minutes a day is not the same animal as one running trails for two hours. Working or sport dogs can need 1.8x to 2.0x RER. Couch dogs sit closer to 1.2x.
Body condition score (BCS). Ignore the scale. Look at the dog. You should feel ribs easily under a thin fat cover, see a waist tuck from above, and a slight abdominal tuck from the side. If ribs are hidden, cut 10 percent. If the spine is visible, add 10 percent.
Coat type. People ask if a curly F1B eats differently than a wavy F1. Coat genetics don't change caloric needs. What does change things is grooming frequency, since a heavily matted coat can hide weight gain for months.
Senior Goldendoodles
Most doodles slow down between 8 and 10 years old, though minis often stay active longer than standards. Expect to drop calories 10 to 20 percent from adult intake. Joint issues, hypothyroidism, and dental pain all reduce activity or appetite, so any sudden weight change in a senior dog warrants a vet visit before you adjust food.

Common feeding mistakes
- Free-feeding. Leaving a bowl out all day makes portion control impossible and doubles obesity risk. Two measured meals is the standard.
- Eyeballing scoops. A "cup" from a random coffee mug can be 30 percent off. Use an actual measuring cup or a kitchen scale.
- Forgetting treats. Treats should be under 10 percent of daily calories. A single bully stick is 80 to 120 kcal. Three training treats can easily hit 60 kcal. Subtract from the meal.
- Switching food overnight. Transition over 7 to 10 days to avoid GI upset. Doodles have famously sensitive stomachs.
When to talk to your vet
Book a check if your dog gains or loses more than 5 percent of body weight in a month, refuses food for over 24 hours, or drinks noticeably more water. Weight gain in older doodles can point to hypothyroidism, which is common in the breed and easily treated once diagnosed. A typical thyroid panel runs $80 to $150.
