How Much to Feed a Shih Tzu
Writing guide now.
Most adult Shih Tzus need about 30 to 40 calories per pound of body weight each day, split into two meals to protect their small stomachs and keep blood sugar steady. A 12-pound couch-companion lands around 400 calories. A 12-pound Shih Tzu who hikes and plays hard closer to 480.
Start with your dog's actual weight
Guess wrong on weight and you'll feed wrong for months. Weigh your Shih Tzu on a home scale (hold them, subtract your weight) or ask your vet's tech to weigh them next visit. Healthy adults usually land between 9 and 16 pounds. If yours is well outside that range, feed for their ideal weight, not their current weight, and check with your vet.
Body condition matters more than the number on the scale. Run your hands along their ribs. You should feel each rib with light pressure, like the back of your hand. If ribs are hidden under a fat pad, they're overweight. If ribs jut out visibly, they're underweight.
Daily calorie targets by life stage
These are starting points. Adjust up or down based on body condition over 2 to 4 weeks.
Puppies (8 weeks to 12 months)
Puppies burn calories fast and have tiny stomachs. Split meals across the day so blood sugar stays stable, hypoglycemia is a real risk in toy breeds under 4 months.
- 8 to 12 weeks: ~55 calories per pound, four small meals
- 3 to 6 months: ~50 calories per pound, three meals
- 6 to 12 months: ~40 calories per pound, two to three meals
A 4-pound, 10-week-old puppy needs roughly 220 calories a day, spread across four feedings of about 55 calories each. That's tiny. Read the calorie count on your puppy food bag, don't assume "1/4 cup" is universal.
Adults (1 to 10 years)
Two meals a day. Morning and evening, 8 to 12 hours apart. This spacing helps prevent bile-reflux vomiting (that yellow foam some Shih Tzus throw up on empty stomachs).
- Sedentary or neutered/spayed: 28 to 32 cal/lb
- Moderately active: 33 to 38 cal/lb
- Very active or intact: 38 to 44 cal/lb
Worked example: a 10-pound spayed Shih Tzu who gets two 20-minute walks a day and lounges the rest needs about 320 to 350 calories. If her kibble is 380 kcal per cup, that's just over 3/4 cup total, split into two 1/3-cup meals.
Seniors (10+ years)
Metabolism slows, joints get stiffer, activity drops. Most seniors need 20 to 30 calories per pound. Watch for dental disease, a Shih Tzu who suddenly eats less is often telling you their mouth hurts, not that they need less food.
Portion chart (dry kibble, ~400 kcal/cup)
| Weight | Sedentary adult | Active adult | Puppy (6-12 mo) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 lb | 1/2 cup | 3/4 cup | 3/4 cup |
| 10 lb | 3/4 cup | 1 cup | 1 cup |
| 12 lb | 3/4 to 1 cup | 1 to 1 1/4 cup | 1 1/4 cup |
| 14 lb | 1 cup | 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 cup | 1 1/2 cup |
| 16 lb | 1 to 1 1/4 cup | 1 1/2 cup | 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 cup |
Kibble calories vary a lot. A "small breed" formula can run anywhere from 350 to 450 kcal/cup. Do the math for your bag. Grab a calculator: /paws/tools/food-portion-calculator.
Wet food, fresh food, and mixes
Wet food usually runs 25 to 40 kcal per ounce. A 3-ounce pouch is roughly 90 to 120 calories, about a quarter of an average adult's daily intake. If you feed half kibble, half wet, halve your kibble portion, don't add wet on top.
Fresh-cooked meal delivery brands publish calorie density per gram. Follow their feeding guides for your dog's ideal weight and adjust after two weeks based on body condition.
Treats count. The 10% rule: treats should stay under 10% of daily calories. For a 12-pound Shih Tzu at 400 calories, that's 40 calories of treats. One small dental chew can blow past that. Use tiny training treats or break bigger ones into pieces.
Common Shih Tzu feeding problems
Free-feeding leads to weight gain. Shih Tzus don't self-regulate well. Measure meals, pick up the bowl after 20 minutes.
Picky eating is often about smell and texture. Their short muzzle affects how they experience food. Warming wet food slightly or adding a spoon of low-sodium broth can help.
Vomiting yellow bile in the morning. Usually an empty-stomach issue. Move breakfast earlier or add a small bedtime snack.
Dental disease affects nearly 90% of small-breed dogs by age 3 (per AVMA). If your Shih Tzu eats slowly, drops food, or paws at their face, get their teeth checked before adjusting portions.
When to talk to your vet
Weight loss or gain of more than 10% in a month. Sudden appetite changes. Difficulty chewing. Any Shih Tzu puppy who skips a meal (hypoglycemia can hit fast in toy breeds). Your vet can also calculate a precise Resting Energy Requirement if your dog has a health condition like Cushing's, diabetes, or IVDD.
Feeding your dog isn't set-and-forget. Reweigh monthly, feel their ribs weekly, adjust portions in 10% increments. Small dogs feel small changes fast.
