How Much to Feed a Border Collie
Border Collies typically need 900 to 1,400 calories a day, split across two meals. Pet-lifestyle adults land near the low end. Working dogs herding sheep or running agility trials push the top.
How to size a portion
Start with your dog's resting energy requirement (RER), then multiply by an activity factor. The NRC formula veterinary nutritionists use:
RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)^0.75
Then:
- Neutered pet adult, light exercise: RER × 1.6
- Intact adult, moderate exercise: RER × 1.8
- Active pet (1–2 hours daily play): RER × 2.0
- Working herding or sport dog: RER × 2.5 to 5.0
- Puppy under 4 months: RER × 3.0
- Puppy 4 months to adult weight: RER × 2.0
Worked example: 40-lb pet Border Collie
40 lb equals 18 kg. RER = 70 × 18^0.75 = 612 kcal.
- Neutered pet, walks and yard play: 612 × 1.6 = 980 kcal/day
- Same dog, weekend agility class: 612 × 2.0 = 1,225 kcal/day
- Same body running livestock 4+ hours: 612 × 3.0 = 1,835 kcal/day
Most premium kibble runs 350–420 kcal per cup. So that pet Border Collie eats roughly 2.4 cups a day, split into two meals of 1.2 cups. Check your bag's label. Calorie density varies more than owners expect.
Skip the "feeding chart" printed on the bag. Those numbers are set for intact working dogs and overfeed the average pet by 20–30%.

Border Collies are lean by breed standard. You should feel ribs easily under a thin fat layer and see a tuck-up behind the ribcage from the side. If ribs are hidden, cut 10% for two weeks and reassess.

Puppies eat differently
A Border Collie puppy needs about twice the calories per pound of an adult of the same size. Feed three meals a day until 6 months, then drop to two. A 20-lb four-month-old puppy needs roughly 900 kcal, not the 600 you'd feed an adult of that weight.
Growth-formula food matters here. Adult maintenance food doesn't have the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio a growing herding dog needs. Look for "complete and balanced for growth" on the AAFCO statement, not "all life stages" if you want tight nutrient control.
Border Collies typically hit adult weight at 12–14 months. Switch to adult formula then, not before.
Working vs pet: the calorie gap is real
A Border Collie moving sheep for six hours in cool weather can burn 2,500+ kcal. The same dog on a rest day needs 900. Feed to the day, not the average. Underfed working dogs lose muscle in a week. Overfed pet Border Collies gain a pound a month and blow out cruciates by age 6.
Signs you're overfeeding:
- Waist disappears from above
- Fat pad over the tailbase
- Slow to get up after naps
- Losing interest in food you used to gulp
Signs you're underfeeding:
- Spine and hip bones visible from 10 feet
- Dull coat
- Stool volume drops sharply
- Constant food-seeking behavior
Splitting meals and treats
Two meals a day, spaced 8–12 hours, works for adults. Border Collies don't need free-feeding and most will overeat if you try it. Treats count toward daily calories. Cap them at 10% of intake. That's about 100 kcal for a pet Border Collie. Two small training treats, not a Kong stuffed with peanut butter.
If you use food puzzles or slow feeders, feed the same total. Puzzles slow eating and burn a little mental energy, not calories.
When to recheck
Weigh your dog monthly on the same scale. A 4-oz swing means nothing. A pound in a month means adjust the ration by 10%. Older Border Collies (8+) often need a 15–20% cut as activity drops. Spayed females frequently need a 20% cut in the six months after surgery.
If your dog's weight won't budge despite a proper portion, ask your vet to check thyroid. Hypothyroidism shows up in the breed and looks exactly like "she just needs less food."
